Rollator-Rest
A mechanical wall unit that lets passengers park their rollator safely and stay seated on it during the journey.
More and more elderly passengers and people with reduced mobility travel by rollator or wheelchair. Rollator-Rest lets them use public transport comfortably and safely, with little impact on the operator's processes or the driver's work.
It is a purely mechanical unit, mounted at an accessible spot in the vehicle. The passenger parks the rollator in it and stays seated on their own familiar device, secured for the journey. The design was proven in a practical test with Zürich's public transport operator, VBZ.
The problem it solves
Travelling with a rollator
On board, a passenger with a rollator has to find a seat, move to it and then secure the rollator separately. That costs time, takes up a regular seat and is not always safe when the vehicle accelerates or brakes.
Roll in and brake
The passenger rolls the rollator into the unit and applies both of its brakes.
Lock to the unit
The rollator is parked and locked to the wall unit, so it stays in place.
Stay seated
The passenger sits on the rollator's own seat, with a hand on a fixed support.
Step off
At the stop the rollator releases and the passenger leaves with it. The unit then resets, ready for the next user.
Benefits
Sit on a familiar device
Passengers stay on their own rollator instead of searching for a seat and moving to it, with one or both hands on a stable support.
Secured for the ride
The rollator stays in place and upright, which reduces the risk of it shifting or tipping during the journey.
Frees a regular seat
A passenger with a rollator no longer occupies a normal seat, and boarding is quicker because nobody has to move across the vehicle.
Purely mechanical
No electronics: standard industrial components give a long service life and simple maintenance.
